Geelong defeat St Kilda by 12 points in thrilling AFL grand final
September 26, 2009 Geelong have claimed their second AFL premiership in three seasons, finishing over the top of St Kilda in a breathtaking and brutal final quarter to win 12.8 (80) to 9.14 (68). To St Kilda, footy sucks sometimes ... we were very, very lucky and we're very proud of what we've done. Mark Thompson Geelong's coach was magnanimous in victory. The Cats trailed by seven points at the final change, but they then kept the Saints goal-less while kicking three majors themselves, by key forward Tom Hawkins, Norm Smith Medal winner Paul Chapman and Max Rooke - the last, by Rooke, after the siren. At the other end of the ground, key defender Harry Taylor capped a superb game with a towering mark in the final minute that evoked memories of Leo Barry's famous grab for Sydney Swans. The mark was just reward for Taylor, who had performed a superb shutdown job on Saints skipper Nick Riewoldt. The result saw Geelong claim their eighth premiership, while minor premiers St Kilda suffered more heartbreak. The Saints' heroes of 1966 remain their only flag-winning team in 113 years. St Kilda dominated much of the opening three quarters only to pay the heaviest price for their inaccuracy in front of goal - much as Geelong did in the 2008 decider. "To St Kilda, footy sucks sometimes ... we were very, very lucky and we're very proud of what we've done," winning coach Mark Thompson said. Thompson said they were never going to let this chance slip. "... at three-quarter time, I just said 'you play a lifetime of footy to get into this position, play your best quarter of footy, this is what dreams are made of' and I thought our last quarter was outstanding." St Kilda coach Ross Lyon, whose club is left with their one-point grand final win over Collingwood in 1966 as their sole premiership in 113 seasons, said he could not question his players' efforts, despite their missed opportunities. "Obviously I'm upset for them, upset for the club," Lyon said. "A lot of people put in a lot of work and it's a lot of work to get back here, so it can be a little bit overwhelming. "But in saying that, I don't think we crumbled under grand final heat, we stood up ... we're a better team and a better club than we were at the end of '08 and that's the aim again next year." The sides traded behinds after Hawkins kicked a major less than two minutes into the final term, but Cats full-back Matthew Scarlett and Brownlow Medal winner Gary Ablett then combined in the midfield to force the ball forward about three minutes from full-time and Chapman put Geelong six points clear with a snap. Each side then posted another behind before Rooke marked just ahead of the final siren and slotted home the shot to stretch the winning margin to 12 points as teammates celebrated across the field. For the Cats, the result marked a reverse of last year's shock grand final loss to Hawthorn, when they dominated in general play but could not convert on the scoreboard. "There was a lot of pressure from everybody expecting us, saying if we only won one out of three it's not good enough," Thompson said. "That's not to say we can't win it again next year and that we won't be trying to win it again next year and our run is over, it's clearly not." But for much of Saturday's encounter, the Cats looked unlikely victors. The Saints had control for long periods but their grand final nerves showed in front of goal. They missed numerous scoring chances in the first quarter, including a sitter from Adam Schneider from the top of the goal square. In contrast, the Cats kicked three successive goals for the quarter, including a wonderful effort by Joel Selwood after he had burrowed through a half-forward pack. But the Saints still led by two points at the first change, thanks to their vast dominance in the midfield - due largely to the efforts of Lenny Hayes and Nick Dal Santo. They again wasted their control early in the second term. Two bad missed shots from Stephen Milne and a shocker from Andrew McQualter in the space of three minutes meant they led by just 10 points 11 minutes into the quarter, when the margin should have been about 30 points. in the 2005 decider. The Cats made them pay, with four goals in an 11-minute burst to grab a 12-point lead. That burst included a controversial major to Hawkins, who smothered a Zac Dawson kick from full-back then hit the post with his snap but was paid a goal. There was more drama to come, the Saints scoring three goals in the final 49 seconds of play for the half - the last two back-to-back after Geelong defender Darren Milburn had angrily, and incorrectly, protested that he had touched a Justin Koschitzke soccered goal in the dying seconds of the term. Koschitzke's goal tied the scores, but Milburn's abuse of the goal umpire resulted in a free kick to Schneider, who gave the Saints the half-time lead. The third term was an arm wrestle, with the players starting to tire and ferocious tackling making moving the ball with fluency next to impossible. A late Saints goal broke the deadlock, a brilliant Leigh Montagna snap in the 30th minute putting them six points up before a rushed behind made the margin seven points at the last change. But the Cats gradually wore St Kilda down in the midfield, and the influence of Selwood and Ablett was telling in the packs. Jimmy Bartel also did a great job to quell Hayes after his early influence, and tagger Cameron Ling reduced Dal Santo's impact. |
