Narrowly Missed Fortune

Extract from the following source, The Greyhound Annual 1970. "Warren Harper, his trainer, narrowly missed a fortune when his other dog, Holding, was beaten in a photo finish in the first leg of the Daily Double. Harper had invested $100 on the Daily Double combination of Holding and Beau Brin. Astute estimates at the time put Holding's narrow defeat as costing Harper $50,000". Let me assure you that $50,000 was a lot of money at that time. Warren Harper is the trainer of former star NSW stayer Miagi. Warren and before him, his dad, Les, trained a lot of dogs and a lot of good dogs, so he has come to know all about the "ups" and "downs" of dog racing, the "highs" and the "lows". The other dog Beau Brin did win the NSW Derby Final that night, landing good bets at odds of as much as 40/1 (e.g. $4000 to $100) so it was probably not all bad.

Minor correction to the above, it was the NSW St Leger Final that Beau Brin won that evening.

Yutha mate, I was there that night and Beau Brin won that race easily, and yes at 40/1.
But did you know that Beau Brin was a maiden when he won that race. He finished second in the semi final and he just made the final. And further more the dog never raced again.

Mate I forgot to add that I backed the dog and got 33/1 that night with bookmaker John Harrigan. I won enough money to put a deposit on my first home. I was 20 years old then and had been married for 6 months and living with the inlaws.
