Cool Takes Flight In Cup Heat
TOP GRADE Wentworth Park sprinter Cool Flight has posted a near record to be the fastest qualifier for next Sunday’s Canberra Cup Final.
The black dog began brilliantly from box three and was never threatened on the way to registering a slashing 30.29 seconds.
His time was only .03 outside Heugill Bale’s 2002 track record.
Cool Flight was having only his second start at the track and turned the tables on Victorian Cyclone Ned which held him at bay by 2 1/4 lengths in 31.04 seven days earlier.
The opening cup heat was out by Not Cheap in a slow 30.95. Local sprinter Billy The Bullet led to the back straight but was collared by Spader but the Wagga-trained Not Cheap finished best to win.
Smart Victorian Bo Frazier finished a luckless third.
Heat two went to Majella Ferguson’s Smashing Amy. She posted cracking early sections and safely held the talented Eluthra at bay to score by just on four lengths in 30.35.
Cool Flight dominated heat three before Borat and Snozz faced off in a tense battle.
Roxy Eva (box 7) made the early running but Snozz was close at hand and made his move with Borat as the field reached the 600m boxes.
The experienced Borat finished best to score by a half length in 30.60.
The box draw for the Group 3 Canberra Cup Final is: 1 Not Cheap, 2 Snozz, 3 Cool Flight, 4 Cyclone Ned, 5 Spader, 6 Borat, 7 Eluthra, 8 Smashing Amy. Branded and Iigloo Osti are the reserves.
The Rapidvite Cannonball Final (310m) will complement the Cup final on September 14.
The opening Cannonball heat went to Fifield Lass in 17.94 seconds. Heat two was secured by Osti's Command in 17.85s. Short-course specialist Dark Secret posted a sizzling 7.44secs to the first mark in his sizzling 17.65s win in heat three while veteran Sky Lion cut Miss Hyperactive down to snare heat four in 17.93s.
The box draw for the $3000 to the winner Cannonball is: 1 Behind, 2 Miss Hyperactive, 3 Red Action, 4 Dark Secret, 5 Sky Lion, 6 Cool Temptation, 7 Osti's Command, 8 Fifield Lass. Ascania and Bell’s Fair are the reserves.
