Default Warriors keep the dream alive

September 19, 2008

THE words on Ruben Wiki's wrist said it all - Carpe Diem - and seize the day the Warriors did as they prolonged their inspirational prop's NRL farewell with a 30-13 semi-final win over Sydney Roosters in Auckland.

The Warriors survived a controversial penalty try and several other no try calls to book a preliminary final against Manly at the Sydney Football Stadium next Saturday.

"I don't want this ride to end," Wiki said.

And neither did the 25,585 fans that crowded into Mt Smart Stadium to witness their team move to within 80 minutes of their second grand final berth.

While the final score indicated somewhat of a blowout, the Warriors were forced to do it the hard way, with the Roosters taking a 13-6 lead into the break.

"To get out at half-time only seven points down, we weren't too unhappy about that, the boys just came out and showed more control than they have probably in any game," Warriors coach Ivan Cleary said.

"I couldn't ask for much more really."

The Warriors were unstoppable after the break, the only thing denying them an even more comprehensive win was some desperate Roosters defence and some tough calls from referee Steve Clark.

But after Lance Hohaia scored his second try of the night just after half-time, the game - and the officiating - turned as the Warriors surged.

A touch-and-go try to Ian Henderson, who appeared to put the ball on Braith Anasta's foot before rolling it onto the ground, started a rot which continued when Manu Vatuvei dived over minutes later.

When Aiden Kirk raced 80 metres to score an intercept try six minutes from time, the celebrations were underway.

For the Roosters the loss ended a season which promised so much. Their second-half fade was eerily similar to the one which allowed Brisbane to run over the top of them in week one of the finals.

"It was in the back our minds ... we encouraged ourselves not to let it happen again and we unfortunately we did," Anasta said.

"I don't know what it is."

Still coach Brad Fittler said the signs for the club were positive despite his obvious disappointment at the result.

"From a point of view of the Roosters it's been outstanding, they were coming last about eight weeks to go last year and we got ourselves to fourth," Fittler said.

"We bowed out of two semi-finals and we're going to learn a lot from that.

"From where they've come, they've done a great job."

Hohaia scored after just three minutes to hand the Warriors the perfect start, but it was all the Roosters early on, only for their attack in the opposition's red zone to let them down.

The Roosters levelled the match on 28 minutes when Mitchell Pearce backed-up his own 40-20 kick to cross next to the posts.

But the Warriors were left seething just three minutes later when Hohaia was ruled to have taken out Anthony Minichiello as he attempted to chase down a rolling ball in the in-goal area.

Cleary said the only positive he took out of the decision was that it didn't affect the outcome.

"I've been saying all year that I'm not a fan of the video ref ... it's an absolute lottery," Cleary said.

"How it was a foul I can't see.

"I'm just really glad that it didn't affect the outcome of the game."

The match was marred by allegations of bottles being thrown at the Roosters after Hohaia's second try. Roosters full-back Minichiello claimed one of the two plastic bottles just missed him.

Default Storm break Broncos' hearts

September 20, 2008

INSPIRATIONAL Melbourne captain Cameron Smith was confident his part in a contentious second half tackle wouldn't rub him out of next weekend's preliminary final against the Sharks.

Melbourne snatched victory 16-14 when superstar Greg Inglis dived across the try line with just seconds remaining at Suncorp Stadium just as the 50,000 crowd thought the Brisbane Broncos would hold on.

Smith and replacement Jeremy Smith were called out by referee Shayne Hayne and spoken to sternly after they wrestled Broncos forward Sam Thaiday around the head and upper body in the 60th minute.

Players from both sides ran in and pushed and shoved each other in the first of two flare ups.

With 93 carry over points from the opening round, Smith could be suspended for two games if charged and found guilty of a grapple tackle.

Smith though wasn't too concerned at the possibility the tackle could deliver him a savage blow should Melbourne progress past Cronulla next weekend to the grand final.

"There was a lot of us involved in that tackle," said Smith, blood seeping from a bandage above his left eye.

"I see on the replay that my arm was up around his head."

Asked if he was nervous about it, the Australian captain said: "Not really."

"I don't think there was any intent involved and I didn't try and twist or choke him or anything like that.

"It's not up to us.

The NRL's video review committee will no doubt take a close look at the tackle.

"It's getting close to grand final time and I guess the team will be waiting on a decision," said Smith.

"They've looked at tackles like this all year and made their decision. Like I said, it's out of our hands."

Storm coach Craig Bellamy, who is good friends with beaten Broncos coach Wayne Bennett, admitted he wasn't sure at half time when his side was down 12-0 if his players could come back.

"At half time I wasn't sure if we were going to get out of it," he said.

"With a few minutes to go we didn't look like we were quite good enough but we hung in and got a bit lucky.

"It's all a bit of a blur to me know, it feels like the top of my head is going to blow off."

Melbourne were reduced to 12 men midway through the second half but managed to pinch a try to get back to 14-12 when full-back Billy Slater pulled in a Cooper Cronk kick to score near the posts.

The try was a huge turning point with three Brisbane defenders, Darren Lockyer, Karmichael Hunt and Justin Hodges all guilty of failing to attack the ball.

"We should have stopped the Slater try," said Bennett whose 21-year reign ended on a gut-wrenching note along with retiring forward Tonie Carroll.

Bennett was tough right to the very end, refusing to show any emotion other than disappointment after the heart-breaking farewell.

"I'm more disappointed about losing a game of footy than I am about leaving the club," he said without a hint of emotion.

Lockyer was a forlorn figure, shedding a tear on the field.

"I don't think I have ever felt like that before. We turned up tonight .... I'm lost for words."

Default Melbourne thrash Cronulla in NRL preliminary final

September 27, 2008

STORM 28 SHARKS 0

Regrets. Cronulla will have a few. The Sharks have waited 41 years for premiership success and after falling 28-0 to Melbourne in the second last week of 2008 they'll be trophy-less for another year at least.

Cronulla had tied at the top of the table with the Storm and Manly and, after winning a week off in the finals, hopes were building the men from the Shire could finally go all the way to the title.

But it seems the late and great coaching genius Jack Gibson was right all along when he said: "Waiting for Cronulla to win a premiership is like leaving the porch light on for Harold Holt."

Melbourne didn't just turn the lights off for Cronulla tonight, they cut off the Sharks' electricity and stole their matches.

Gone was the spark which had Cronulla enter the finals series as the only team to have beaten all other teams in the top eight.

Lost was the composure they carried for the previous 28 weeks of the competition.

And it took just three minutes for Storm stand-in captain Cooper Cronk to expose the anxiety, all 41 years of it, in the Sharks.

Cronk predicted the rush defence to get around opposing skipper Paul Gallen and find space before he grubbered ahead for Steve Turner to score.

The next 37 minutes was a football team falling apart.

Dropped balls - eight in total - and missed tackles plagued the Sharks and unfortunately for young five-eighth Blake Green, he had a horror half.

Green was called into the team after Brett Seymour's unlucky knee injury last week as the club resisted pleas from sponsors and fans to reinstate Test star Greg Bird.

Bird was stood down last month by the club over an alleged glassing incident involving his girlfriend but, with his court case looking like falling through, the club had been under increasing pressure to let him play.

Coach Ricky Stuart, though, never caved in and instead called upon Green, with just 11 NRL games under his belt, to play the club's biggest game in years.

It was a brave decision by Stuart when many others would have gone the other way.

It just wasn't Green's night.

He twice passed to teammates who didn't expect the ball, dropped it cold himself and was in the defensive line when Cronk put Israel Folau over in the 24th minute.

The Sharks trailed 16-0 at halftime and, while they improved in the second half, it was clear halfback Brett Kimmorley was lacking a playmaking helper.

Cronulla just couldn't break Melbourne's defensive line and every time they built pressure they'd ruin it with another dropped ball.

It was Cronulla's worst performance of the year - equalling the 34-6 loss to Manly in round 15.

They desperately needed Bird's gamebreaking ability.

The Sharks might have claimed a moral victory by refusing to field Bird, but that's little solace to the loyal fans who may have just seen a rare chance at premiership success pass them by.
