1st Round
Scott fails, Pampling performs
August 08, 2008 ROD Pampling made a brilliant birdie at the final hole to edge within two strokes of the first round lead at the US PGA Championship. The Queenslander struck a five-iron to inside three metres to finish in style at the tough par-four 18th, carding an even-par 70 at Oakland Hills. "It was a good, solid day. I got off to a good start at the first hole, chipped it in (for birdie)," said Pampling, who heads the Australian contingent after a day in which 18 players failed to complete the round due to a weather delay. Swede Robert Karlsson and Indian Jeev Milkha Singh are the clubhouse leaders on two-under 68, while Argentine Andres Romero is also two under with two holes left. Pampling is best of the Australians, with Richard Green, Aaron Baddeley, Steve Elkington and Brendan Jones also well placed on 71, and Scott Strange one-over after 16 holes. Geoff Ogilvy shot 73, but Adam Scott's hopes all but disappeared with a 77 that left him needing an outstanding second round just to make the cut. Scott double-bogeyed the difficult par-three ninth to go four-over at the turn, and never recovered on the back nine. He cut a forlorn figure as he walked alone to his car, caddie Tony Navarro and coach Butch Harmon trailing behind. Pampling has been quiet the past few weeks, missing the cut at the British Open and finishing a long way back at last week's tournament in Ohio, but he was very happy with his swing in round one. Green, meanwhile, made a nightmare start with a bogey at the first hole, where he found a fairway bunker and caught the lip with his second shot, but he buckled down to shoot a very respectable score. "It was a good round, considering the start," he said. "My emotions weren't exactly on the happy side, so it was important that I made a birdie at the second hole and steadied the ship. "Every part of my game was really good, apart from the first hole. I hit some great shots through the closing holes." At the 18th, Green had 200 metres to the hole with his second shot. He hit a perfect two-iron that landed on the front of the green, but trickled all the way through to the back rough. "I couldn't have hit a better shot," he said. "I drilled it." Meanwhile, co-leader Singh shrugged of an ankle injury to tie for the lead. Singh has an inflamed tendon in his right ankle, an injury he suffered seven weeks ago, but it hasn't stopped him from winning twice since then - once in Europe and once in Japan. "It's worked for me pretty good, touch wood," said Singh, whose father Milkha was one of India's greatest runners. Known as the 'The Flying Sikh', he finished fourth in the 400 metres final at the 1960 Olympic Games. His son made a flying start. 2nd Round
Baddeley in contention, Scott out
August 09, 2008 ADAM Scott will have blood tests next week in an effort to identify the mysterious illness that has sapped his strength several times over the past four months. Scott completed a "wasted year" in the majors when he missed the cut by two strokes after the second round at the US PGA Championship. On a day when fellow Australian Aaron Baddeley moved within three strokes of American leader J.B. Holmes at Oakland Hills, Scott could only reflect on what might have been had he been fit and healthy. "I've got to get some blood tests to make sure I don't have anything too serious," said the 28-year-old Queenslander, who has been bothered more than once by painful throat ulcers. Scott's woes started the week before the Masters, when he fell ill with a fever that was accompanied by ulcers. It was much the same condition that knocked him for six last week, preventing him from preparing properly for the PGA. And then there was the broken bone in his right hand, which he incurred when a mate slammed a car door on it just three weeks before the US Open, preventing any meaningful preparation for that event either. Under the circumstances, Scott should not be ashamed of his results in the first three majors - equal 25th at the Masters, tied 26th at the United States Open and equal 16th at the British Open. Even though he worked hard on the range with coach Butch Harmon on Monday and Tuesday this week, he could not find his missing swing in time for the PGA. An opening seven-over-par 77 cooked his goose, and though a second round 73 was better than the average score, it was too little, too late. "I had a lot of bad rhythm," said Scott, who only a month ago was ranked fourth in the world. "It's easy to time it on the range, much harder on the course. It didn't really fall into place at all. "I played as bad as I have all year, ball-striking wise. I only made one birdie in two days, and that was a two-putt. "My swing was horrible. I didn't hit many fairways, therefore I didn't hit many greens, so I never had chances for birdie." Fellow Queenslander Rod Pampling also made an early exit after a shocking meltdown. He was within one stroke of the lead early in the second round, but dropped 11 shots in 11 holes mid-round on his way to an 81. Baddeley, on the other hand, made a fast start with an eagle at the par-five second, where he drained a 15-metre putt, before hanging on in extremely tough conditions to card a stellar 71 that left him equal seventh. Long-hitting American J.B. Holmes was the only player to finish 36 holes under par, as a moderate breeze, thick rough, severely sloping greens and firm conditions conspired to test the skill and patience of the world's best. Holmes carded 68 to post a one-under-par 139 halfway total, one stroke ahead of compatriot Ben Curtis, Englishman Justin Rose and Korean Charlie Wi, while pre-tournament favourite Phil Mickelson was four behind. It was the first time since 1972 that only one player was under par after two rounds at the PGA. It's no coincidence the championship that year was also held at Oakland Hills. Baddeley was the only Australian close to the lead, with Steve Elkington next best, five shots back after a nightmare bogey, bogey, double bogey finish at the final three holes. "In the end I was pleased (with my score) because it was so difficult out there," said Baddeley, who played the 18th hole while a light plane flew overheard towing a banner advertising a local strip club. "It was nice to get ahead of the game early. I had a couple of chances on the back nine which would have been nice to convert, on (holes) 11 and 13, but it was hard." Baddeley expressed satisfaction with every facet of his game, except perhaps his driving, which he may need to tighten up to contend. "I didn't drive it too bad on the back nine. I didn't drive it as well on the front nine. If I can hit a couple more fairways, I think I'm fairly good." FULL LEADERBOARD 1 15 J.B. Harrington reigns in Oakland Hills
August 11, 2008
PADRAIG Harrington won his second Major title in three weeks and in the process broke Sergio Garcia's heart at the US PGA Championship. Harrington putted brilliantly down the stretch, making lengthy putts at the final three holes to beat Spaniard Garcia and American Ben Curtis by two strokes in difficult conditions at Oakland Hills. Irishman Harrington ended a 78-year-old European drought at the PGA, the first winner from the other side of the Atlantic since Tommy Armour, the Silver Scot, won the 1930 championship. Harrington last month was simply brilliant over the final nine holes as he passed Greg Norman in the closing holes at the British Open, and this time he stuck a dagger into Garcia's heart. One stroke ahead after a three-metre birdie at the 17th hole, Harrington hit a poor drive at the par-four 18th, laid up into the rough, and then fashioned a nine-iron to five metres, before sinking the putt to clinch victory. "I was willing them into the hole," said Harrington, who carded 66 to finish at three-under-par 277. Garcia (68), who subsequently missed a meaningless par putt, tied for second with Curtis (71) on one-under. Garcia tried to be positive despite his bitter disappointment after losing to the same man who edged him in a play-off at last year's British Open. "I gave it my all. Unfortunately, sometimes things don't want to go the right way," he said. Aaron Baddeley (73) was the highest-placed Australian, nine strokes behind in a tie for 13th, one shot ahead of Stuart Appleby (72). Harrington began the final round tied with Garcia, three strokes behind then leader Curtis. But Garcia made the hottest start, a 1.5-metre birdie at the par-four first followed by a magnificent eagle at the par-five second. Garcia held a two-shot lead over Curtis at the turn, with Harrington three behind, but the Irishman erased the deficit with three birdies in the next four holes. A bogey at the 14th halted Harrington's momentum, before Garcia received a bad break at the 15th when his approach shot clattered against the pin, without dropping, and he could not convert the three-metre birdie putt. The par-four 16th was the scene of high drama as Garcia found the water with his approach shot, his six-iron sucking back into the pond. However, he made a great up-and-down to salvage bogey, while Harrington showed poise under pressure too, ramming home a four-metre par putt. That left them tied with two holes left, and both hit career five-irons at the brutal par-three 17th, Harrington to three metres, before Garcia responded to the challenge by sticking his shot to inside 1.5 metres. But Harrington got to putt first, and he made another assured stroke under the most immense pressure, his ball never looking like finishing anywhere except the bottom of the cup. Garcia, whose sometimes dodgy putting stroke had held up well all day, deserted him at the wrong time, his ball lipping-out. Advantage Harrington, who took a one-stroke lead to the final hole, where the drama only continued to build. Both players hit poor drives, but Garcia drew a good lie in the rough and was able reach a greenside bunker with his second shot. He could not hole his third shot and when Harrington salvaged his par, Curtis, playing behind, was the only danger. After Curtis bogeyed the 17th he needed an eagle at the last, and when his second shot did not find the hole, Harrington had won his third Major title in six starts.
