Need Help for New Greyhound Owner

Hey,

So I've purchased my greyhound and I thought id give you a update of what i've done and any tips and recommendations on how to proceed would be great.

Some info about the pup

Sire: Surf Lorian
Dam: Ikari Lee (Career: 18 Starts. 6-4-2) You can check her stats on grv
Whelped: 02/06/07

I purchased the pup in November '07 on a payment plan and have since paid it off. The person I purchased it off was rearing it until his work commitments in the start of the new year made him give the pups he was rearing to a friend who is also a rearer. There details are as follows.

Omega Park Kennels.
Near Seaspray which is about 3.5 hours east of Melbourne.

I have paid all rearing fees up until 1st August when the pup is 14 months.

That is as far as I have gotten I haven't yet talked to the new rearer and don't really know much about them. When I call him what sort of questions do I ask.

Any other tips would be great. Such as a good breaker that you would recommend.

Last pup I had was broken in at Marums. I found Alan a honest bloke, who was more than helpfull. As my bitch was a problem bitch (was quite spooky, and home sick) who decided, she wasn't happy beening there. They put her around the track first time, she chased, bit onto the bunny ripped it off the arm. Threw it up in the air, caught it. Jumped the outside fence and she was off. It took them quite a while to catch her. (she must have thought, I've done what required I'm heading home..lol). Well Alan rang me up and arranged me to come and pick her up. And she returned to do day (school), where I would drive her down and break her in myself under Alan and his staffs guidence. I would use him again no worries.

Now Suzy's retired. Relaxing on the couch as I post this.

McNamaras is by far the best in victoria, but wouldnt get in - probably a good 6 month wait minimum.

Heard nothing but good things about Marums too so definately would try there.

Better of booking pups in 3-6 months prior to breaking in if ever possible - just a note for the future if you buy into any more pups as sometimes this late is difficult and u dont want to be stuck without anywhere for your champ to be broken in.

Other places you might like to try is Dave Knockers, Tooradin -(03) 5998 3373 or 0414 983375

I dont know Dave Knockers number though - but i heard he is brilliant.

Good Luck with your pup - love its sire.

bundy 03-30-2008 11:07 PM

Dave and partner.... nothing like a good pair of knockers lol

TheChook 03-30-2008 11:09 PM

Lol Brad!!

Just had a look at breeding - SENSATIONAL. If you paid anything under 5k for that pup your laughing i reckon. Hope she breaks in well as bred to be anything!

Apollo 03-30-2008 11:28 PM

what is your opinion on the pup auctions at dapto each year

TheChook 03-30-2008 11:39 PM

Apollo - most are buybacks so can be disappointing but hell its one great day out and easy to get yourself a bargain pup!!!

Brilliant day out!

TheChook 03-30-2008 11:39 PM

I go every year, also whinge every year wanting to buy a pup and have had one on last yr and one in this yrs. Exciting

bundy 03-30-2008 11:41 PM

Plus you can meet me and jaime - what a bonus :D *laughs*

Apollo 03-30-2008 11:43 PM

i bought one 3-4 years ago for $2k a dog out of proper tears, never made the track, i felt i got ripped off from breeder/rearing/break in etc, it end up costing like around 4k all up and since then i said never again but now im getting into the syndicates only.

though for some reason im thinking about it again

claffin 03-31-2008 01:01 AM

Many dont - thats the sad part of it all. Gotta study bloodlines hard and try to find the best out there - but chances of that arent the best!

claffin 03-31-2008 11:34 PM

I've asked around about marums and apparently they not too good. There's a guy called bulller I believe his name is that im trying to get the number for apparently hes good. So ill look into that

rob 03-31-2008 11:36 PM

You talking about Steve Bull?

He is a good breaker, iffy rearer

claffin 03-31-2008 11:37 PM

not sure all I know is they call him buller lol.

Yeah I just gonna have them as a breaker i've got a great rearer already :)

nofx 04-08-2008 10:07 PM

Ive always had a high opinion of John Rohan who is in trafalgar. Ive only ever used him for re-breaking and box work but they have always come back a lot better than when they left. Ph: 0418 147 411.

claffin 04-08-2008 11:59 PM

I have booked my pup into a breaker now who came highly recommended and as a very good rep. His name is Grant something i forgot his last name but he is in ballarat. He is also relatively cheap compared to most at around $60 a week. I would post his number but im not sure if its permitted. Im sure if you ask around you might find his last name.

coops 09-26-2008 12:59 PM

Hello all.
This is my first post, so I hope I do it right.

In July of this year 2008 I purchased a greyhound from a fellow in the Leeton (NSW) area. The dog has had 12 starts for 1 win and 4 placings when I got him. He was broken down in 7 places with his hip being the worsed affected. After 6 weeks on the leed I slipped him up the straight at Appin 274mtrs. He pulled up ok. 5 days later I trialed him at the same place and distance and he ran 16.5. Again he pulled up ok.
10 days later I trialed him at Glengarry over the 400 and he ran 24.35.
9 days later I raced him at Richmond over the 400 and he finished 5th in 23.30 beaten 6lths. Another 9 days later he raced at Bulli over 515 and he finished 4th in 29.35 beaten 2 lths.
Now here is my questions.
1. Am I running him too much? ( He has been off the lead 9 times since I've had him.)
2. Are those times at those tracks any good?

He is nearly 3 years old.
He weighs 32.5 klg.
I exersise him 20 minutes walking twice a day.

I would appreciate some advise.

Thankyou

coops
