Slater
Just wondering what people think about Slater. Has anyone got any slater progeny and how are going ??? I know of a litter hitting tracks now out Al Fresco dam of Mantra Lad. Ten Bandannas and Red Bandanna are racing at Cranbourne this monday night trained by Glenn Rounds and bred by Martin & Fiona Hallinan. These pups should give Slater a good start on the track and all goes well I might put my broodie to him. cheers Dougie :)

lol Dougie, for a moment there I thought you were talking about my Surf Lorian boy "Slater" who won for me last night at Temora! (racename Stole A Break)
I think I've heard about a few Slaters that were trialling ok around the local area, but not sure what times they ran or how old sorry. |
Looks like Slater has produced his first winner as a Sire last night at Cranbourne. He is a half brother to the Mighty Mantra Lad.

Put one around Glengary the other day. First run back after 6 weeks off because of breaking in. 18.31 we were happy with thay.
|
Ay Dodger. Purely as a matter of interest what does a good dog run at Glengary and where is this track. I see the names of these trial tracks and occasionally times but they mean very little, in fact next to nothing to me. Let's define a "good dog" in this case as something that is quick over the 300 and is at least top grade country/TAB 300m sprinter. Otherwise what is the record for the 300 at Glengary. Richmond Grove is another track I see written up sometimes. I have a feeling a good breakin time there is under 19.0 but is based on only one piece of advice. Sorry to bother you with all these questions which you may or may not be able to answer but finally where is this Cawbourne track and what are the respective time standards there. As I said, only as a matter of interest.
|
glengary is near Richmond. Good break in time for 300 is around 18.10 to 18.30.Richmomd Grove is at the back of Richmond race track. 18.20 to 18.40.
Cawbourne is a straight trial track near Camden. 18.70 to 19.00 is a good break in time. coops |
Good on you Coops many thanks. Sounds like decent sorts of performed dogs need to be running well and truly in the 17s at Both Glengary and Richmond Grove and that a good straight track performer is going to run close to 18.0.

Slater's looking good for your bitch Dougie.

Still haven't decided yet mate. I do have about 6 months to make a my choice of sire. Just glad he is getting winners as there are a lot of people bagging him. GO SLATER !!!!!
|
Another winner for Slater tonight at Richmond with Oh Olivia trained by Larry Procopio.
|
Dougie, I have no reason to push the Slater barrow but I am in accord with you re the "baggers", in fact, I usually love to see the baggers eat humble pie as in most cases they are just a lot of dumb arses who like nothing better than to heap you know what on any sire who happens to produce a few non chasers or whatever, as if producing a non chaser or two or three is so uncommon. However, there really is no sire out there that excites me much. I have asked about Collision one or more times but no one seems to have any special opinion about him. I expect he does not give you much more chance of producing a good litter than any one of many other sires.
|
I love it when people laugh at me when I tell them what the sires are of the pups I've got at the time!! One of them by a dog called Zealous Guy went on to win a Syd Cup and the next best was by Jack Jnr and she won 18 races and around 70k!! On both occasions I was ridiculed for buying the pups buy "Experienced" dog people and told I had just waisted my $$!! The bitch that won the 18 races, I have just put to Big Daddy Cool and nearly everyone has told me what a mistake that was, so fingers crossed!!!!!!
|
Yes Gippy there are many opinions within the world of greyhound racing, that's OK but some think their opinions are tantamount to the "greyhound gospel". You know how "mixed up" I am and this "mixed upness" extends to not really having a clue which sire is better than another. Dougie's Sires Lists he regularly posts is terrific, I always look at it but I find it difficult to draw too many conclusions from it. Good luck with your Big Daddy Cool, I have a very small share in a tiny Big Daddy Cool bitch which is currently being broken in but unfortunately it is part of the Team Bundy debacle with a "you know what" fight going on at present. Very unpleasant. Actually I think Dougie's good litter might have been Big Daddy Cools, maybe I am wrong, again.

HA...I have spoken to alot of people who dont want to go to Big Daddy due to the "type" of dogs it produces. On pure numbers, Big Daddy is actually up there with the best... Well was 6 months ago when I was monitoring it closely lol |
Go Slater !!!, Another good win by Ten Bandannas last night at Cranbourne. Began average but flew down the back past the leader going into home straight to score easily for a good win. Big future for this dog. cheers Dougie :)

Will definetly need to clean up his act over the first few 100m's..No doubting his talent, but when he finally reaches a field which has even one or two handy dogs in (up till now he has raced against complete spastics), he may be tested in the early stages and his true colours will get to be proven one way or the other.. Regardless..Any dog that clock around 30.20 at Cranbourne is airborn...defiently a dog to follow |

Just like me. I only have dogs that are city class and eat cockatoo's, alpaca's, rats, goats, cars, kennel mats, barbed wire and fence posts.

Take the Wayne Vassallo trained Rookie Traveller. Breathtaking 29.78 winner of his very first race start around Sandown Park back in April. No doubting this dog has a huge motor and ability. He has one big problem. Shocking first split times has meant they have to put him over the longer distance (which he looks suited anyway) and he is yet to deliver on any of his early promise. No doubting Roundsy only keeps stars, thats obvious. But, this dog reminds me of Rookie Traveller from what I have seen. With that being said, he might be the "learning" type and smarten up with age, but the only way you will be a super star and have ordinary box/first split manners if you have a motor like Turanza Bale or good old Proven Alias.... Time will tell |
At 21 months old and only had 3 starts, I think it will be awhile until we see this dog at his best! He is a half brother to Mantra Lad, both being by Al Fresco, so staying will probably be something he will get to somewhere down the line!! I agree he has not raced against much yet and it will be interesting to see a real quick one out in front of him and see if he can mow it down!!! I do not know Glen Rounds but I'm a huge fan since back before his World Title days as he places his dogs so well and doesn't waste a start with them, so no doubt he will extract every bit of ability that the dog has!!

Slater pups
I have bought 5 Slater pups that are currently 17 months old. All the boys broke in like smoke. The fastest boy broke his leg in a shepparton trial and will be out for five months. But look out for the other 2 who will be racing in 6 weeks time. It will be somewhere out in the country. the 2 girls are taking a little longer to come on but they are trailing at shepperton today i think. One of the girls looks to be something special. The dogs are just a picture to look at, all big 33 - 37 kg dogs and the bitches would be around 30kg. We are expexting some big things of these dogs especially the dog who broke his leg and will be back running around xmas time. He ran the quickest trial of the day at shepp a few weeks back and his leg broke 20mtrs from the post. It would have some time he ran. Very upsetting for all parties involved but he will back to his best the vet is sure. One last thing i will say Advanced vet clinic in the city is the best animal hospital in Victoria. They specialize in animal breaks and using them dramatically improved his chances of running again.
